"Doris Peltier is an Aboriginal woman from the Wikwemikong Unceded First Nations reserve in Ontario. She was diagnosed with AIDS in 2002 and has since then been an AIDS activist with local, national and even international Aboriginal communities. She recently consulted over 300 women in order to create the Aboriginal Women’s Strategic Action Plan on HIV/AIDS for the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN). Peltier has also worked with a handful of AIDS Service Organizations and currently sits on the Board of Governors for CAAN. But Doris Peltier’s main strength is her passionate story-telling voice. At the life-changing moment of her diagnosis, Peltier began to speak about her turbulent past; the abuse and the obstacles that she and so many women faced in Aboriginal communities across the country. Peltier’s lecture at Concordia is sure to be emotional and thought-provoking, forcing her audience to confront the historical impacts that put Aboriginal people, especially women, at risk for HIV/AIDS." (from website http://aids.concordia.ca/lectures.html) The Friends of Dorothy presents Funny Kinda Guy (Scotland, 2005) a film by Travis Reeves.
Saturday 14th January, 7pm in E.V 1.605, 1515 St Catherine West. "From his first injection of testosterone to the point when his maleness is undeniable, Funny Kinda Guy follows Simon for eighteen months. Engaging and articulate, Simon shares his experiences with humour and honesty. Director Travis Reeves' friendship with Simon gives him unique access to his transition, enabling him to capture very personal moments in this extraordinary journey with intimacy and understanding. Set against the subtle, yet ultimately radical transformation of hormone treatment, are key events in Simon's extraordinary journey. We meet his down-to-earth Australian partner Rowena, and his remarkable parents Cedric and Catriona, who hoped that by their involvement in the film they might help the parents of other trans people." http://www.funnykindaguy.com/film.html I hope to see you there!
